this past friday, riccardo tisci showed another masterful collection for givenchy’s f/w 2012 show. the silhouettes, although nothing new or groundbreaking, exhibited the perfect balance between sports/streetwear and classic tailoring, a harmony tisci has become famous for striking time after time.

the show opened with with male model of the moment simone nobili sporting a classic and immaculately tailored double-breasted suit. yes, the suit is impeccably crafted and dashing, but it’s more than that. tisci’s man is influenced by the past - the cut of his grandfather’s suit - but always looking toward the future, carried by the tide of youth. worn over an all-black ensemble and with a massive (i repeat, massive) nose ring, look 1 is little less than a manifesto declaring the givenchy man has arrived, and he’s not going anywhere.

the show continued in all its glory with a parade of athletic men clad in mixes of rugby stripes, stars (both enamel and applique), studs, and leather, with the models sporting everything from razor sharp tailoring to oversized sweatshirts to pleated skirts, what have become a sartorial tisci trademark.

later on, tisci showed the other side of the givenchy man - equally well dressed and with discerning taste, but more in line with today’s skateboarders than with shareholders. tisci’s oversized tops created perfect columns when paired with voluminous pleated skirts, expanding and shrinking with each step. in addition to the obvious street influences, one sees couture in the construction and attention to detail - a slit at the hem of a sweater, or jewels radiating out from a  shirt collar matched perfectly with those inlaid on a jacket (not to mention all those palettes or nose rings).

tisci’s fall collection made it very clear that the givenchy man is always attentive and conscious of himself in the surrounding world - regardless of the where or when.
