my paris fashion week experience: part 3 - comme des garçons

the third show i had the honor of attending was the comme des garçons mainline show, held a few hours after the junya watanabe show in the 11th arrondissement, in a sort of gym-type space at the palais de la femme.

what a show. each show i’d seen before this (nina ricci, margiela, and junya) were great shows, but there weren’t spectacles. this show was, unarguable, a spectacle.

the setting was terribly simple and plain, but one quickly realized rei chose the bland background so that the clothes and headdresses would be the real centerpieces of the show. inner structure inverted to resemble outer crosshatching, intricate headpieces made of who-knows-what materials, sleeves larger than i am, and enough white to put the royal wedding to shame - one hell of a collection. but i’ll let my favorite pieces speak for themselves.

and the finale:

no? is that not gorgeous? and mind-boggling? the religious and historic overtones, mixed with a somber yet optimistic feeling, reminding one of the disaster that hit japan just earlier this year. it’s nice to see rei’s vision coming through so consciously and clearly, when it easily could have been muddled and lost since the fall shows. now, my only question is; when do we see one of these dresses coming down a wedding aisle?
