so i’m sure by now you’ve realized i’m in berlin
and that i’m loving it.
but here’s a more in-depth review of my time here:
i left the good ol’ usa on september 1st, taking a red-eye flight to berlin with a layover in dusseldorf. the flight was fine, but i was stuck next to a very large man who had a penchant for leaning in his sleep. whatever, no biggie. dusseldorf was a little strange, because we landed at something like 7 am their time, 1 am east coast time. i got a little lost, but nothing too bad. i just hung around at the gate for a while, and then hopped the hour-long flight to berlin.
that first day we didn’t do much, we were all so tired and jetlagged that not much could happen. i think i made some friends that night and we went out to trinkentoifel (spelling=questionable), the bar that has since become our go-to place.
since then we’ve been hanging around, exploring the city, going out (waaaaay too much), and such. we started classes this past week, and so far they’re going well. i definitely need an internship here, or else i think the amount of free time i have will kill me.
the people also abroad with me are cool (for the most part). some strange/unsavory people, but what are you going to do, that’s life.
getting back to going out. i feel like i’ve done it waaay too much this past week, but i’m hoping that dies down soon enough. i can’t sustain this lifestyle either biologically or economically. thankfully pretty much everything here is cheaper than anywhere else i’ve been - i guess i’m just not used to spending on going out and spending much money, thanks to some key friends at nyu.
what else is there to say…
ah, the food. now, i’ll be honest and tell you i was not excited about what i thought german food was going to be when i was coming here. i thought i was going to starve. honestly, it’s been the complete opposite. the food here is so much more global that i thought it was. and so cheap, too! (that’s thanks to living in kreuzberg) i’m 100% sure that i’ve eater more turkish food in this week than ever before in my entire life. but anyway, the food is very diverse, and living in one neighborhood/going to classes in another opens many more doors of culinary experience. already found some very good, cheap go to places. love it.
i’ve been doing alright concerning health. i’m feeling like i’m coming down with a little cold, but that shouldn’t be so bad. otherwise, i’m obviously tired from all this insanity, but i’m trying to calm down more. which the music festival is definitely not conducive to.
speaking of that, i just got back from day 1 of berlin fest, a big music festival here. saw some good shows, but two stood out for me.
1: robyn. what a concert. a real act. she really knew how to work that crowd and the stage, while playing amazing, banging music.
2: fever ray. didn’t know fever ray before going to her show, but i am so happy i went. another amazing concert, but to me it was more of a “show”/”performance” - what distinguishes it from robyn. i need to re-live that show over and over again.
basically, that’s the need to know. (i’m sure that’s not the need to know, i’m just bored and whatnot now.)
so, on that note, guten nacht.
(if that’s spelling wrong, don’t hate me.)
