on the centre pompidou

today i went to the centre georges pompidou with a few friends. i’d been before, but they had rotated a lot of their permanent collection, so it was almost like a new museum. one piece i particularly enjoyed was plight, by joseph beuys, pictured below.

it’s a full 2 rooms covered in rolls of beuy’s signature grey felt. one has to enter through a sort of dwarf-sized door, and immediately you’re in this silent, grey, soft sanctuary. it’s at once comforting and extremely unsettling. you’re all alone with your thoughts and the (very) noticeably silent piano. it felt almost like the first snow, when you realize how quiet things have become outside.

although you should definitely go and see the art, this post is more because i was so blown away by the view today. around 6:30 pm the sun had begun to set over paris, making the fifth floor balcony the place to be.

i really love the building laws in paris. i remarked to one of my friends that “here we are, five stories up in a museum, and we can see over everything… that would never happen in new york”.

after leaving the museum, we went to a little japanese restaurant a few blocks away called yakatori house or something like that. people had told me japanese food is pretty good in paris, something i was pretty skeptical of. was i wrong. it was fantastic!

i had a miso soup, little salad, and this bowl of rice topped with sushi-style salmon, which i threw my ginger and wasabi into with a dash of soy sauce. so simple, so scrumptious (is alliteration allowed, even with the word scrumptious?) - sometimes you don’t need molecular gastronomy and coconut foams to make a good meal.
